NHS blood pressure check

High blood pressure has no symptoms until it causes harm. This NHS check is free for adults aged 40 and over, and for younger adults where there is a reason to check.

About this service

Measured properly

Taken in the consultation room, sitting quietly, which matters more than most people realise.

24-hour monitoring

If the reading is borderline we can fit a monitor to wear for a day and read the results afterwards.

What the number means

The pharmacist explains the result and what, if anything, you should do next.

How it works

01

Ask at the counter

No appointment. Busy times are late morning, so early afternoon is usually quieter.

02

Have the check

You sit quietly for a few minutes and the pharmacist takes a reading, sometimes more than one.

03

Get the result

The reading is explained, sent to your GP, and if needed we arrange 24-hour monitoring.

Questions about this service

Do I need to book?
No, walk in. If the pharmacist is with another patient you may wait a few minutes.
I am under 40, can I still be checked?
Ask. The free NHS check targets age 40 and over, but the pharmacist can check younger adults where there is a clinical reason.
What if my reading is high?
One high reading does not mean you have high blood pressure. We may repeat it, arrange 24-hour monitoring, or refer you to your GP.
