NHS Pharmacy First

Seven conditions can be dealt with here instead of at a GP surgery. You are seen in the consultation room, and if treatment is right for you, you take it home the same visit.

About this service

Assessed properly

The pharmacist examines you and checks your medical history and current medicines before deciding anything.

Treated on the spot

Where a prescription-only medicine is the right answer, the pharmacist can supply it under the NHS service.

Told what happens next

If the condition needs a GP or urgent care, we say so and help you get to the right place.

How it works

01

Ask at the counter

Describe your symptoms. The team checks whether the service covers them.

02

See the pharmacist

You go into the consultation room. The pharmacist examines you and asks about your health and medicines.

03

Leave with a decision

You get treatment, self-care advice, or a referral. Everything is recorded and sent to your GP.

Questions about this service

Which seven conditions are covered?
Sore throat, earache, sinusitis, impetigo, infected insect bites, shingles, and uncomplicated urinary tract infection in women aged 16 to 64.
What does it cost?
The consultation is free. If the pharmacist supplies a prescription medicine you pay the standard NHS prescription charge, or nothing if you are exempt.
Will my GP know?
Yes. The pharmacist records the consultation and sends it to your GP practice.
What if I am not eligible?
The pharmacist tells you why and directs you to your GP, NHS 111, or urgent care, depending on the symptoms.
