Flu jabs: who gets one free and when to have it

Flu is not a heavy cold. For people with heart or lung conditions, and for anyone over 65, it can put you in hospital. The vaccine is the one thing that reliably lowers that risk, and it is free for the groups the NHS lists.

Who is eligible

The NHS list includes people aged 65 and over, pregnant women, people with certain long-term conditions, carers, and people living with someone who has a weakened immune system. If you are unsure, ask at the counter and we will check.

Timing

Protection builds over about two weeks and fades over the season, so autumn is the right time. Waiting for the first cold snap leaves you unprotected for the fortnight when cases are already climbing.

What to expect

The injection takes seconds. A sore arm for a day is common. The vaccine cannot give you flu, because it does not contain a live virus.
