Blood pressure: what the two numbers actually mean
Blood pressure is written as two numbers. The first is the pressure as the heart pushes blood out, the second is the pressure as it rests between beats. Both matter.
Reading the result
As a general guide, around 120/80 is a healthy adult reading, and consistently 140/90 or above usually counts as high. One reading on one day is not a diagnosis, which is why a high result is normally repeated or checked over 24 hours.
Why it is worth checking
High blood pressure causes no symptoms until it damages something. It is one of the few serious conditions you can find with a five-minute check and treat before you ever feel unwell.
Getting an accurate reading
- Sit quietly for five minutes first
- No coffee or cigarette in the half hour before
- Arm supported at heart height, feet on the floor
- Do not talk while the cuff inflates
Where to get checked
The NHS check in the pharmacy is free for adults aged 40 and over, and for younger adults where there is a clinical reason. Results go to your GP, and we can fit a 24-hour monitor if the reading needs confirming.
